Negotiating a New Car Price

Quotes are different for each free car buying service, so get a consensus. Spend a few minutes now and save a few thousand dollars later. Your ability to negotiate the best price with the dealer depends on the results of your quotes from these sources. Put all your free car buying quotes in "The Folder" that you bring to the dealer.

Never Negotiate On An Empty Stomach

Before you go to negotiate eat a good meal, make sure you are rested, showered, and dressed comfortably.  Dress casually, not in shorts and a T-shirt with your lint filled belly button showing, but in nice jeans or Dockers and look smart.  Walk in there looking like Warren Buffet, not Jimmy Buffet.  Do NOT go car shopping if you are sick, have a fever, or a headache.  Bring a low priced financial calculator with you, like Hewlett Packard or TI with loan calculation functions.

Don't Be An Impulse Buyer!

"This car is the hottest! We're selling them at $1000 over MSRP!"
Tell them you don't want a car that is "hot", you'll be paying too much, and next year it won't be worth squat, because the next "hot" car will replace it.   Tell them you are not interested in the car, if everyone's buying it.  Now you are being proactive, and taking charge.   Just keep chiseling at all their statements, always have a comeback for whatever they throw at you.

Wait until the demand drops before you buy
When they double the output and supply catches up with demand, prices may drop, so be patient.  What's the payoff for being patient a month or two?  Other than a potentially lower cost, you'll have more money saved up, than if you bought today.  This will reduce your amount financed to a lower price, and hence you'll have lower monthly payments than if you bought today.

Free Auto Accessories & Insurance

Many Auto dealers provide free accessories to boost their company performance. Do look for discounts and free accessories like music systems, central locking, seat covers..  Do try to get maximum free accessories. But so not get carried away at  the idea of getting free accessories at the expense of old car models.

Most of the auto car companies have tie ups with some or the other insurance companies. There is a specific percentage of the car insurance's price that is credited to the dealer's account by the insurance company if the car is insured directly from the dealer. So try to make quick gains by asking for free first insurance or some percent of insurance say about 40 -50 % from your car dealer.

You Have The Right To Know

When you buy a car you have the right to know how much it will cost including interest rate, trade-in value, taxes, and fees, all disclosed in writing.  But there are people who don't want you to know how much you're spending, and divert your attention from higher costs by pointing to monthly payments you are comfortable with.  Don't get comfortable yet, you're about to learn how to protect your rights.

Off Seasons

If you are not in a hurry and can wait for certain time then discount or off seasons are always the best time to buy new cars. You can have maximum discounts at these time of years. Look for Christmas or new years.

New Car Price Quote

Always take along your new car price quote. Although this represents the car dealers lowest possible price on a new car and should include any dealer rebates and incentives offered, there is always room to negotiate a better deal. Auto manufactures often want to get rid of slow selling cars or reduce inventory, therefore they offer cash rebates or low financing deals. Even with a great new car price quote, negotiate on the price.
